Free antivirus software may be the only option for those on a limited budget. The question is how well free antivirus software protects your PC, how easy is it to use, and what if something goes wrong ? I had been a proponent of open source, free, or shareware supported AV products for along time.

However, in late May 2009, a Russian variant of a nasty bug blew right through AVG and Windows Defender like they were not even installed!!!!!
